Beyonce at the O2 Arena, review - No Comments

Beyoncé Knowles’s mother Tina was once the proprietor of a hair and make-up salon in Houston. Here her daughter would observe the rituals and secrets of Texan womanhood en route to becoming the biggest pop star in the world. At this spectacular affirmation of her position she brought those days to life, transforming the vast 02 arena into a 20,000-strong lock-in at a Texas beauty parlour. With nine dancers and a 13-piece, all-female band (three drummers!), at times the sheer amount of hair onstage made it hard to see. Beyoncé’s own extravagant mane seemed to have all the properties that adverts promise at once: movement, volume, direction, body, curls, sheen, all-day bounce. Repeatedly she bowed her head and tossed it, like a pony at its first gymkhana. The crowd were an even greater frenzy of femininity. When she went through the traditional dividing of the hall into cheering sections, the response from high up at the back was a shriek of joy barely audible to sheepdogs. “Yeah,” she beamed (the teeth!). “I’m feeling your energy.” Then she sang Ave Maria in a wedding dress and veil made from fluffy swan feathers of virgin white. But, as any Texan knows, virgin white will only get you so far. While Knowles has beauty and a powerful voice, it is her dancing that has made her great. Emerging from backstage, she launched into a series of spectacular gyrations in a Thierry Mugler chrome bikini, the bottoms of which were part-pants, part-codpiece. Lest we lose her in the dark, Thierry had installed coloured flashing lights at key points. To the delight of the crowd, these described wildly suggestive shapes in the half-light. By the time she had lifted off from a 40ft gold lamé dress and flown across the room to an island mini-stage, the super-talented 27-year-old had emphatically raised the bar for what can be done in an arena show. It only remained for the moment that 20,000 had been waiting for: Single Ladies – the song, the dance, the video that has swept around the world and become the anthem of the year so far. “All the single ladies! Put your hands up!” I have to confess that mine were up as high as anyone’s. Telegraph Rating: * * * * *

Beyoncé tour postpones Boston-area concert due to production size - No Comments

Beyoncé’s July 22 concert at the 19,900-capacity Comcast Center in Mansfield, MA, has been postponed due to her tour production’s size. No other dates have been affected, and her July 23 show at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, CT, will still go on as scheduled. “The size of the production exceeds what is available at Comcast,” a Live Nation spokesperson advised TicketNews. The stage set-up is to include a special second stage in the center of the venue called the B Stage. A new Boston area date is being scheduled. The music and film star is currently on a European tour through June 9. Her North American leg begins June 21 at Madison Square Garden in New York, NY, and winds down with a four-concert residency from July 30 through August 2 at The Wynn in Las Vegas, NV. Beyoncé’s I AM…World Tour is her first since the sold out Beyoncé Experience tour in 2007.
